As of Friday February 19th, Margaret Mitchell made an announcement via twitter that she was fired from Google after making claims about discrimination within the company. Prior, Mitchell worked as the lead of Google’s Ethical Artificial Intelligence team.
Google confirmed her firing with the statement, “After conducting a review of this manager’s conduct, we confirmed that there were multiple violations of our code of conduct, as well as of our security policies, which included the exfiltration of confidential business-sensitive documents and private data of other employees.”
Back in December, Dr. Timnit Gebru also claimed to have been fired by Google after writing an email addressing the lack of women being hired by Google. She worked for Google as the co-lead of Google’s AI ethics team. However, Google still claims that she resigned.
Gebru took to Twitter stating she had been fired after there was a complaint filed against Google for unlawful surveillance and firings of employees.
With the rapid growth of Artificial Intelligence and the potential dangers of the technology, it is important that AI ethics is taken seriously. As a user of Google, it is rather concerning that they are continually having issues within the company and their AI ethics team.
As a tech giant, Google should be prioritizing the the health, safety, and wellbeing of consumers. Yet, they seem to be continually wrongfully firing the employees who have this mindset.
