Kevin Spacey: From Hero to Zero

Should your actions in your personal life have an effect on your professional career? Some people agree, some people don’t. One of the biggest stories in the past week or so, is the actions of Award winning actor, Kevin Spacey. For those of you who haven’t heard, many reports came out regarding the actor, accusing him of multiple sexual assault accusations. Actor Anthony Rapp accused Spacey of Harassing him when he was only 14 years old, and more people came forward with stories of their own. Spacey controversially came out as gay while apologizing to the people involved in the multiple incidents. This caused Spacey to receive even more hate, because he is being accused of “softening the blow”. According to a CNN article on Nov 4, Netflix cut ties with the actor and cancelled the last season of his most successful show, House of Cards. This caused a lot of frustration from fans who anticipated the release of the new episodes. They disagree with this decision, and they don’t believe that he should be reprimanded for his actions that took place years ago. Netflix released a statement saying “Netflix will not be involved with any further production of ‘House of Cards’ that includes Kevin Spacey”. They will still work with the production company to decide the future of the show. This relates to what we have discussed in class, because Netflix have been put in a position where they need to choose between the image of the company, or the continuation of its most successful show. I personally agree with the decision they made, due to the fact that it shows where they stand on this issue, and they will not associate themselves with criminals. They protected their own image, which could prove to be extremely beneficial for them in the future.

If you guys were the CEO of Netflix, what would you have done?
