The Era of Globalization

Globalization is the process by which the world is interconnected through technology and powerful infrastructure for the purpose of communicating and managing resources. It refers to the free movement of goods, capital, services, people, technology, and information. As Thomas Friedman says, this era of globalization is built around individuals. Today, globalization empowers, enjoins, enables, and requires individuals to globalize themselves via the clothes they wear, the food they eat, the gadgets they own, and the mobile apps they use.

Globalization has enabled me to stay connected with my family and friends from all around the world. Mobile applications like WhatsApp, SnapChat, and Instagram have made it possible to share moments, memories, photos, and messages at any instant time. Now, I can order clothes, shoes, accessories, electronics, and various other products from any part of the world with just a few clicks on my laptop and worldwide shipping. Celebrating birthdays, graduations, weddings, and sending gifts to my near and extended family and friends has become super easy.

Globalization has impacted United States and American citizens in a positive and in a negative way. To start with, the influence of U.S. has been spread around the world. The opening of multinational corporations in other countries, American companies have been able to sell their products easily and influence other nations as well. In many nations, the American culture, values, and ideologies have been adopted due to the establishment of the multinational corporations. On the negative side, globalization has rendered many American citizens jobless. Foreigners are willing to work for more hours with lower wages. Organizations have opted to outsource their labor to third world countries as opposed to hiring the expensive personnel from America. Thus, unemployment levels have been on the rise in the last few decades.
